Arrest Made in Poison Capsule Distribution During Muharram

The Mumbai police have arrested a man from Pune for allegedly distributing capsules filled with rat poison to participants in a Muharram procession. The accused was reportedly approaching individuals and offering the capsules free of cost, claiming they were pain-relief medicines and immunity boosters intended to improve health.

Details of the Incident

According to a police spokesperson, the incident occurred on 26 June 2026 during a Muharram procession in Mumbai. The accused, identified as 34-year-old Ramesh Gaikwad, was taken into custody after a tip-off from a concerned citizen who noticed suspicious behavior. Gaikwad had allegedly distributed over 50 capsules before being apprehended. Preliminary investigations suggest the capsules contained a lethal dose of rat poison, which could have caused severe harm or death if consumed.

Police Response and Investigation

Senior Inspector Anil Patil of the Mumbai police stated, "We received a complaint about a man distributing free medicines during the procession. Upon examination, we found the capsules contained rat poison. Immediate action was taken to prevent any casualties." The police are now investigating whether Gaikwad acted alone or as part of a larger network. They are also checking if any participants consumed the capsules and have urged anyone who may have taken them to seek medical help immediately.
