The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Mumbai arrested a junior clerk from the Regional Transport Department (RTO) in Borivli on Monday for allegedly accepting a bribe to reduce a penalty imposed on a bus owner.
Details of the Case
According to the ACB, the accused, identified as Mithun Vilas Ade, had demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 from the complainant. The bribe was sought to reduce a fine of Rs 26,500 that had been imposed on the complainant's bus. The complainant, unwilling to pay the bribe, approached the ACB and lodged a formal complaint on June 1.
Verification and Trap
During the verification process, ACB officials confirmed that Ade had initially demanded Rs 5,000. After negotiations, he agreed to accept Rs 4,000. Subsequently, the ACB laid a trap. Ade was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of Rs 4,000 from the complainant.
Legal Action
Following the arrest, the ACB registered a case against Ade under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The investigation is ongoing to determine if there are any other individuals involved in the corrupt practice.
This incident highlights the continued efforts of the ACB to combat corruption in public offices. The bureau encourages citizens to report any instances of bribery or corruption to help maintain integrity in government departments.
