The central government has ordered a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the recovery of 79 crude bombs in Bhangar, Kolkata, on Saturday. The order stated that a scheduled offence under the NIA Act, 2008, has been committed, involving illegal storage and handling of explosives to endanger lives and property, intending to create fear and terror among citizens.
Details of the Recovery
On Saturday, a police team from North Kashipur police station raided an abandoned house near a burial ground at Poilepara. During the raid, they recovered 79 round-shaped objects tied with jute ropes, resembling crude bombs, along with other incriminating materials.
No Arrests Yet
No arrests have been made in connection with the case so far. Sources indicate that the NIA may interrogate local strongman Wahidul Islam, who is also a key accused in the March 19 blast case.
Tension in Bhangar
Tension erupted in Bhangar after some locals allegedly assaulted Wahidul Islam when he suddenly returned to the area. Wahidul had been on the run since the blast incident. Residents spotted him in the Chak Moricha Tetultala Ghat area, surrounded him, beat him up, and then handed him over to the police.
Political Context
Bhangar is witnessing a fierce electoral battle, with Trinamool Congress candidate Saokat Molla taking on ISF chief Nawsad Siddique. Trinamool lost this seat to Siddique in 2021, but Bhangar contributed to TMC's Saayoni Ghosh's victory from Jadavpur in the Lok Sabha elections.
