Despite a legal ban under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, the principal of a private school in Sadwan, Nurpur, allegedly thrashed a Class VII student for not completing his homework. The incident, which occurred on Monday, triggered outrage among the student's family and villagers, who gathered at the Nurpur police station on Wednesday to demand strict action.
Police Register FIR After Medical Examination
The victim's mother, Usha Devi, took her son to the local civil hospital on Tuesday for treatment and subsequently filed a complaint. Following a medical examination, police registered an FIR under Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act and Section 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nurpur Dharam Chand Verma confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway and action will be taken according to the law.
Mother Alleges Severe Beating by Principal
In her complaint, Usha Devi stated that her son failed to complete homework assigned by the class teacher. She alleged that the school principal entered the classroom and beat her child severely, leaving visible injury marks on his body. She also revealed that her son had joined the school about three months ago and later told her that other students were subjected to similar corporal punishment on the same day.
Child Welfare Committee Takes Cognisance
The Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Kangra, has taken cognisance of the incident. CWC president Viramjeet Sharma has sought a status report from Nurpur police and directed them to take appropriate action. Police said further investigation is in progress.
