Parbhani Suicide Victim's Medical History Reveals Troubling Details
Datta Sopan Pawar allegedly died by suicide in Parbhani, Maharashtra, just four days after his release on bail. Police records now reveal he had been diagnosed as suicidal and suffering from alcoholism before his arrest in December 2024. The case has drawn attention to mental health issues within the justice system.
Prior Diagnosis and Treatment
A senior police officer stated that after Pawar's arrest, authorities learned he had sought treatment from two psychiatrists in Akola. These doctors diagnosed him with mental illness and noted he was suicidal. He also struggled with alcoholism. The police informed the prison about his condition, leading to treatment during his incarceration.
Court documents show Pawar received mental health treatment at a hospital in Pune while serving 13 months in jail. His lawyer argued during bail proceedings that Pawar had been receiving treatment for behavioral issues and alcohol use since 2012. From September to November 2024, he was admitted to an Akola hospital.
Bail and Release Complications
Pawar received regular bail in November 2025 but could not pay the Rs 50,000 surety. He remained in jail until January 7 this year when an additional sessions judge allowed his release without surety. The legal aid department moved an application stating he lacked financial means and had no contact with his family.
The bail order considered medical reports indicating Pawar suffered from psychotic illness and mood disorder. Doctors emphasized the importance of regular treatment. The Forensic Science Laboratory declined to conduct polygraph and narcoanalysis tests, citing his medical unfitness. His police statement was recorded in jail with a psychiatrist present.
Events Leading to Arrest
On December 10, 2024, a Constitution replica near the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar statue in Parbhani was vandalized. Bystanders apprehended Pawar at the scene and handed him to police. His arrest triggered protests by Ambedkarite activists, including a city shutdown the next day. Several people were detained during these demonstrations.
The situation worsened after the death of Somnath Suryavanshi, a law student and activist arrested during protests. His family alleged custodial assault, causing public outrage. The Maharashtra government suspended a police inspector and ordered an inquiry by a retired high court judge following discussions in the state Assembly.
Aftermath and Investigation
Pawar was released on January 7 and died four days later. Parbhani rural police reported no suicide note was found. Distant relatives did not suspect foul play. His last rites were conducted on Monday.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about mental health support for individuals in custody. Medical reports from Yerwada Hospital in Pune eventually declared Pawar fit to stand trial, but his tragic death has raised questions about post-release support systems.
