Parli to Ban Meat Sales Every Monday for Devotees

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The Parli municipal council will impose a ban on shops and hotels selling different meats every Monday, in response to a long-pending demand from devotees. Monday is dedicated to worshipping Lord Shiva, and his shrine, the Vaidyanath Temple, is visited by thousands of devotees from different parts of India.

Proposal Cleared by Standing Committee

While the standing committee of the local civic body has cleared the proposal, it will be formally approved by the general body in its meeting on April 30. Parli municipal council president Padmashree Dharmadhikari said the sale of meat will be banned through shops and hotels every Monday.

"It was a long-pending demand from devotees and different organisations that meat should be banned in Parli every Monday. We supported the demand unequivocally," she said. She added, "After the general body meeting passes the necessary resolution, we will share our resolve with different government departments for its implementation. The ban will be imposed within a strong legal framework."

Details of the Ban

Corporator and former municipal president of Parli, Bajirao Dharmadhikari, said Parli town has around 80 meat shops and a sizable number of hotels serve non-vegetarian items. "There will be a blanket ban on meat every Monday. Shops as well as hotels will be barred from serving meat. We will be holding a meeting with the establishments concerned to inform them about the ban and seek necessary cooperation," he said.

The ban aims to respect the religious sentiments of Lord Shiva devotees who visit the Vaidyanath Temple. The municipal council expects full compliance from all meat vendors and hoteliers once the ban is formally implemented after the general body approval.
