Pilibhit Family Faces Multiple Charges in Dowry Torture Case Leading to Miscarriage

In a disturbing incident from Pilibhit, authorities have registered a comprehensive case against five family members for allegedly subjecting a 22-year-old woman to severe physical abuse over dowry demands, resulting in a tragic miscarriage. The case highlights the persistent issue of dowry-related violence in certain regions.

Marriage and Escalating Demands

According to the police complaint filed by the victim, her marital journey began on April 2, 2025, with a wedding in Bareilly district. The woman stated that despite what she described as adequate dowry being provided during the marriage ceremony, her husband and his relatives initiated demands for additional payments within days of the union.

The demands reportedly included Rs 5 lakh in cash along with a motorcycle, creating immediate financial pressure on the newlywed. The situation worsened as her husband, who works in solar panel installation, allegedly requested further funds for business purposes.

Financial Disputes and Physical Assault

The complaint reveals additional financial complications in the relationship. The woman alleged that her husband had previously borrowed Rs 1 lakh from her father but later refused to return the amount, adding to the family tensions.

The situation reached a violent climax on January 13 when, according to the victim's account, her husband, his elder brother, parents, and maternal grandfather collectively assaulted her after she expressed inability to meet their latest financial demands.

Tragic Consequences of Violence

The assault took a particularly brutal turn with the woman allegedly being kicked repeatedly in her lower abdomen. This violent attack resulted in excessive bleeding and ultimately led to a miscarriage on January 19 while she was undergoing medical treatment.

In another distressing allegation, the woman claimed that when her mother rushed to the in-laws' house following the incident, they tore her mother's clothes, demonstrating further aggression toward her family members.

Legal Action and Charges

Station House Officer Naresh Kumar Tyagi confirmed that authorities have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused family members under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act.

The charges include:

  • Cruelty by husband or his relatives under BNS Section 85
  • Causing miscarriage without the woman's consent under BNS Section 89
  • Voluntarily causing hurt under BNS Section 115(2)
  • Criminal breach of trust under BNS Section 316(2)
  • Relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act

This comprehensive legal action reflects the seriousness with which authorities are treating the multiple allegations of physical violence, emotional cruelty, and dowry-related harassment that culminated in pregnancy loss.
