Odisha Police Launches Intensive Investigation into Actor's Tragic Drowning Death
In a significant development following the tragic death of actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, the Odisha Police has formally initiated legal proceedings to secure all relevant footage recorded moments before the fatal incident. The police department has officially written to their counterparts in East Midnapore, requesting the handover of crucial visual evidence that could substantially advance the ongoing investigation.
Comprehensive Evidence Collection Underway
As part of their intensified probe, Odisha Police investigators will approach authorities in Digha to procure photographic evidence of the accident scene. Additionally, they have formally requested the raw footage of the drowning incident from the production unit involved in the filming. This comprehensive evidence-gathering approach aims to reconstruct the exact sequence of events that led to the actor's untimely death on March 29 at Talasari beach.
The investigation specifically seeks to determine why the film crew entered the water despite receiving prior warnings about hazardous conditions, and to establish whether adequate safety protocols were followed during the shooting.
Forensic Examination and Legal Proceedings
Police sources have confirmed that once obtained, the footage will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for preservation and detailed analysis. A thorough study of this evidence will be conducted before officers at the Talsari Coastal police station decide whether to issue formal notices to individuals named in the case.
The investigation follows a formal complaint lodged at the Talasari police station by the actor's wife, Priyanka Sarkar, who has alleged gross criminal negligence on the part of the production house, Magic Moments. In her complaint, Priyanka asserted that the production unit was filming without requisite permissions at a location deemed hazardous and unsuitable for shooting.
Multiple Individuals Under Investigation
Among those named in the First Information Report filed by Rahul's wife is veteran scriptwriter and producer Leena Gangopadhyay. According to investigative sources, she will soon be asked to record her official statement regarding the incident. The FIR also names several other individuals including Shaibal Banerjee, Subhashis Mandal, Shantanu Nandi, and Chandra Shekhar Chakraborty, all of whom are likely to receive formal notices as the investigation progresses.
Priyanka's detailed complaint further alleges that the production unit ignored explicit warnings from local residents about the treacherous sea conditions at Talasari beach. She claims the crew failed to implement basic safety protocols and did not provide essential life-saving equipment at the filming location, despite the known risks associated with shooting in such hazardous conditions.
Legal Framework of the Case
Police officials have confirmed that the case has been registered under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 106(1), 240, and 3(5). These provisions pertain to causing death by negligence, providing false statements, and acts committed by several persons in furtherance of common intention. The legal framework suggests investigators are examining potential collective responsibility for the safety lapses that may have contributed to the tragedy.
The Odisha Police's systematic approach to evidence collection and their coordination with multiple law enforcement agencies indicates a thorough, multi-faceted investigation aimed at establishing accountability and determining the precise circumstances surrounding the actor's drowning death during what was supposed to be a routine filming session.
