In a dramatic incident highlighting public vigilance, two young men were apprehended and assaulted by local residents after they allegedly tried to steal a woman's mangalsutra in Mandya district. The event unfolded in Deshahalli village, falling under the jurisdiction of the Besagarahalli police station in Maddur taluk.
The Alleged Snatching Attempt
The victim, identified as Pushpalatha, wife of Shridhar and a resident of Deshahalli, was on her way from her village to Maddur town on Thursday. According to police reports, two youths, Vinay, 21, and Vinaykumar, 21, both from Mandya, approached her on a two-wheeler. They initially pretended to ask for directions before allegedly attempting to snatch her gold mangalsutra.
The duo reportedly managed to grab the ornament and flee the scene initially. However, their quick escape plan hit an unexpected roadblock—literally.
Roadblock Leads to Capture
Their getaway was hindered due to ongoing road repair work ahead on their path. Forced to turn back, the accused returned along the same route. This proved to be their undoing. Alert residents who had learned of the incident recognized the two men on the bike.
The public swiftly intercepted the youths, leading to a confrontation where the alleged snatchers were thrashed. The Besagarahalli police rushed to the spot upon receiving information and took the injured duo into their custody.
Police Response and Investigation
The incident drew significant attention from senior police officials. Superintendent of police Shobharani, additional SP Gangadharaswamy, and Malavalli DSP Yashwanth all visited the scene to assess the situation.
A formal case has been registered at the Besagarahalli police station regarding the attempted chain snatching. Authorities have confirmed that a detailed probe into the matter is currently ongoing to investigate all aspects of the crime.
