Pune Customs Makes Record Hydroponic Weed Seizure from Thailand Cargo

In a major crackdown, the Air Intelligence Unit of Pune Customs on Thursday intercepted a massive consignment of hydroponic weed valued at approximately Rs 26.8 crore. The contraband, weighing 76.6 kilograms, was discovered hidden within a cargo shipment arriving from Thailand at Pune airport.

Unprecedented Recovery in Cargo Consignment

Customs officials confirmed that this operation represents not only the largest single recovery of such contraband in the region but also the first instance where hydroponic weed was detected within an international cargo consignment. A senior Customs officer provided details to the press, stating that the shipment was declared as "Mandarin Orange Sacs," a food item supposedly of Chinese origin.

The consignment arrived via an Air India Express flight from Thailand and was packaged in white thermocol boxes. Upon scanning, the images raised suspicions as the contents did not appear organic. When officers opened a box, they found sealed tin cans containing a salt-like white grainy powder. Inside these cans, vacuum-sealed transparent plastic packs held the hydroponic weed or marijuana.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

The recipient of the consignment has been arrested, and interrogations are currently underway. Authorities are delving into multiple aspects of the case, including:

  • The intended distribution network—whether the drugs were meant for Pune, its suburbs, or across the entire state.
  • The rising demand in Pune, a city with a substantial population of students and young working professionals.
  • The methodology behind using cargo shipments for smuggling, highlighting the brazen tactics employed by traffickers.

Another officer noted that given the increasing number of hydroponic weed seizures at Pune airport since last year, this arrest could be pivotal in uncovering a larger smuggling racket. "More details cannot be divulged at the moment," he said, "but this recovery raises several critical questions about drug trafficking patterns."

Background and Previous Cases

Hydroponic weed is known for its higher purity compared to regular marijuana, cultivated under carefully controlled temperature conditions. This incident follows a trend of similar interceptions at Pune airport.

  1. In 2025, Pune Customs handled around 12 cases of attempted hydroponic weed smuggling, resulting in the arrest of 12 individuals.
  2. Earlier this year, over three cases have already been recorded, including a March seizure of 8kg of hydroponic weed worth Rs 8.7 crore.

Sources suggest that those involved might have been unaware of the stringent checks conducted at the integrated cargo terminal, possibly taking a chance that backfired. The officer emphasized, "It shows the different ways smugglers are brazenly trying to bring in contraband," underscoring the ongoing challenges in combating drug trafficking.

The department is also investigating why prohibited items were sent via cargo, as international cargo from Pune is primarily exported to destinations like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with limited imports. This case has put a spotlight on the evolving strategies of smugglers and the vigilant efforts of Customs authorities to thwart them.
