A 24-year-old software engineer employed with a prominent IT company in Pune's Hinjewadi area was found dead in a tragic incident in the early hours of Tuesday. The young professional died by suicide inside a washroom located in his company's canteen.
Distress Calls Preceded the Tragic Incident
According to the Pimpri Chinchwad police, the incident occurred between 12:30 am and 12:45 am on Tuesday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-II) Vishal Gaikwad revealed that the victim had entered the company premises late on Monday night and proceeded to the canteen area. Before locking himself inside the washroom, he made several distress calls to his uncle and other relatives.
In these calls, the techie explicitly stated that he was taking the extreme step due to significant financial losses he had incurred in online betting. This crucial information forms the basis of the initial investigation by the authorities.
Charging Wire Used; Colleague Discovers the Scene
The police confirmed that the software engineer used a mobile phone charging wire to end his life. The grim discovery was made by another employee of the same company, who found him hanging inside the canteen's washroom. This colleague immediately alerted the police control room.
Senior Inspector Balaji Pandhare of the Hinjewadi police station provided further details about the victim. The deceased was a resident of Wanowrie in Pune and had joined the IT firm approximately a year ago. Following the discovery, a detailed panchnama (spot inspection report) was conducted, and the body was sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Police Investigation and Case Registration
Based on the preliminary findings, the police have stated that the young man ended his life following the financial strain caused by online betting. A case of accidental death has been officially registered with the Hinjewadi police station. While the investigation is in its early stages, the distress calls made by the victim point directly to the motive.
DCP Vishal Gaikwad emphasized that the prima facie evidence points towards financial distress as the trigger. This incident has sent shockwaves through the bustling IT hub of Hinjewadi, highlighting the severe and often hidden consequences of online gambling and financial debt among young professionals.
The police are continuing their investigation into the matter, which underscores a growing concern about mental health and financial pressures in high-stress work environments.
