Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, R Ashoka, on Thursday strongly criticised the state government's proposed Bengaluru tunnel road project, terming the tender as 'inflated and scandalous'. He demanded that the tender be withdrawn immediately, alleging that it was designed to benefit a private operator rather than the city's residents.

The project, which involves constructing a 16.75-km tunnel road to ease traffic congestion in Bengaluru, has been mired in controversy since its announcement. Ashoka questioned whether the project truly serves the public interest or is merely a vehicle for private gains. He pointed out that the estimated cost of the project has escalated significantly, raising concerns about transparency and fiscal prudence.
According to sources, the tender documents have been prepared in a manner that favours a specific consortium, leaving little room for competitive bidding. Ashoka alleged that the government has not conducted a proper feasibility study and is rushing the project without adequate public consultation.
Political slugfest over infrastructure project
The tunnel road project, a flagship initiative of the Congress-led state government, was intended to provide a seamless corridor beneath Bengaluru's congested roads. However, opposition parties have consistently questioned its viability and cost. Ashoka's remarks come days after the tender was floated, inviting bids from private players.
"This tender is a clear example of how the government is prioritising private profits over public welfare. The inflated estimates and lack of transparency are deeply concerning," Ashoka said, according to a statement issued by his office.

They dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and maintained that the tender process was transparent and competitive. A senior official from the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) said, "The project has undergone multiple rounds of scrutiny, and the cost estimates are based on current market rates and international benchmarks."
However, Ashoka remained unconvinced, calling for a detailed inquiry into the tender process. He urged the Chief Minister to intervene and ensure that the project is re-evaluated with a focus on cost-effectiveness and public benefit.
