Ranchi: 2.18 Lakh Youth Take Oath Against Drugs

Ranchi Witnesses Massive Youth Mobilization Against Drug Abuse

The District Legal Services Authority in Ranchi launched a powerful initiative to combat drug addiction among young people. This special drive, part of the DAWN program focusing on Drug Awareness and Wellness Navigation, achieved remarkable participation. A staggering 2,18,750 youths solemnly pledged to reject drugs and embrace a healthy lifestyle.

Widespread Community Engagement Through Multiple Events

Officials organized an impressive 7,375 events across the district to spread the anti-drug message. These activities included vibrant rallies, eye-catching banners with the slogan 'say yes to life, no to drugs', creative painting competitions, impactful street plays, and targeted outreach programs in slum areas and rural communities. The comprehensive approach ensured the message reached diverse populations.

Personal Stories Highlight the Human Impact

The campaign revealed touching personal struggles with addiction. One police officer, whose son battled drug dependency, approached DLSA for assistance. He described how his son's addiction led to violent outbursts against family members and severe self-harm, including broken limbs. DLSA promptly intervened, facilitating the young man's admission to the Ranchi Institute of Neuro psychiatry and Applied Sciences for professional rehabilitation.

Officials Emphasize Rehabilitation and Inspiration

During the concluding ceremony on Monday, Judicial Commissioner Anil Kumar Mishra connected the campaign's conclusion with National Youth Day, celebrated on Swami Vivekananda's birth anniversary. He encouraged young participants to draw inspiration from Vivekananda's teachings about strength and character. The event also recognized student contributions, with Mishra distributing shields and certificates to winners of painting and essay competitions held throughout the week.

DLSA Secretary Rakesh Roushan addressed para-legal volunteers directly, urging them to approach drug addicts with sensitivity and actively support their treatment and recovery journeys. He emphasized that compassion is crucial in helping individuals overcome addiction.

Community Leaders Call for Broader Action

Narcotics Control Bureau SP Shariqque Omar appealed to the audience to expand awareness efforts, specifically targeting illicit opium cultivators. He described their crops as 'growing poison' that fuels the drug trade and destroys lives. His call to action highlighted the need to address both supply and demand aspects of the drug problem.

Social worker Atul Gera advocated for grassroots involvement, suggesting that prevention should begin at home. He urged families to proactively address risky behaviors like cigarette smoking and tobacco chewing, which can serve as gateways to more serious addictions. Gera believes community vigilance can create a protective environment for youth.

This extensive campaign demonstrates Ranchi's commitment to creating a drug-free future for its young generation through education, support, and community mobilization.
