A customer expecting a side of spicy buffalo or creamy ranch sauce with their chicken wings or burgers at a fast-food chain in Chicago got more than they bargained for—an uninvited, unlabeled ingredient: a rat. A video capturing a large rodent making its way through the condiments section of a McDonald's restaurant has gone viral on social media.
Video Shows Rat Among Condiments
The footage, reportedly recorded by an employee, shows the rat climbing and moving through various condiment containers and supplies. The exact date and time of the incident remain unclear. However, an X user asked Grok, an AI assistant, to locate the eatery. Grok suggested it was the McDonald's at 87th Street and Kedzie Avenue in Chicago.
The video caption reads: "A McDonald's employee captures video of a giant rat climbing through the condiments at a Chicago McDonald's." The incident has raised serious questions about the restaurant's food safety protocols and pest management systems. Rodents in food service establishments pose significant health risks, potentially contaminating food with bacteria and pathogens that can cause foodborne illnesses.
Netizens React
Social media users have urged the Health Department to take action, and the video is flooded with comments. One netizen pointed out the timing, referencing a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship: "Totally a great time to be publishing this while that whole cruise ship thing is going on." Another wrote: "Real talk. Rats carry stuff like hantavirus or just gross bacteria, but one rogue rodent doesn't tank a whole chain – still billions of safe meals served yearly. Kinda reminds you why some peeps go air fryer at home."
A third user quipped: "McRat on the menu." Another questioned why the employee was filming instead of acting: "For all y’all ‘Why is she just filming??’ The job title was crew member/cashier, not pest control/rat trapper. Being exposed to potentially deadly diseases was not in there either." A fourth user joked: "On the bright side, the rat seems healthy and happy."
Broader Pest Concerns
This incident adds to a growing list of pest-related problems reported at various fast-food establishments across the country. McDonald's has not yet issued a statement regarding the video.
