An elderly retired police inspector was discovered dead inside his residence in Kanpur on Sunday, sending shockwaves through the local community. The incident occurred in the Kushmanda Nagar locality of the city.
Discovery of the Deceased
Jagat Narayan Awasthi, aged 85, was found lying on his bed after police personnel were forced to break open the door of his home. The discovery was made after his son, Ravindra, who lives in Machhariya, Kanpur, grew concerned when his father repeatedly failed to answer phone calls throughout the day. Ravindra promptly alerted the authorities, leading to the grim find.
Family Details and Police Investigation
The retired inspector lived with his sister-in-law, Uma. However, at the time of the incident, Uma had travelled to Dwarkapuri in Gujarat on December 29, leaving Jagat Narayan alone at the house. His wife, Malti, also resides with their son in Machhariya.
Police officials from the Kasba police post swiftly responded to the distress call. Shailendra Singh, the in-charge of the police post, confirmed that the body has been sent for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. The procedure is currently being conducted as part of the standard investigative protocol.
Community Reaction and Next Steps
The sudden death of the former police officer has left neighbours and former colleagues in a state of mourning. While initial investigations do not immediately point towards foul play, authorities are awaiting the postmortem report for conclusive findings. The case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by senior citizens living alone.
Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, speaking to family members and neighbours to piece together the retired inspector's final days.
