Five members of a family drowned in the Cauvery River in Karnataka's Mandya district on June 25, 2026, while posing for photographs on the riverbank. The victims, all from the same family, slipped into the water and were swept away by the strong current.
Details of the Incident
The incident took place near the Krishnarajasagara dam in Mandya district. The family, including children and adults, had come to the riverside for a picnic. They were taking pictures near the water when one of them lost footing and fell into the river. Others tried to rescue the person but also got caught in the current.
According to local police officials, five bodies have been recovered so far. Search operations are ongoing to locate any missing individuals. The deceased include three women and two men, all relatives.
Rescue Efforts and Response
Local authorities and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot after receiving information. Divers were deployed to search for the missing family members. The police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the circumstances.
The district administration has urged people to exercise caution while visiting rivers and water bodies, especially during the monsoon season when water levels rise and currents become stronger.

Karnataka Chief Minister expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also directed the district administration to take preventive measures to avoid such accidents in the future.
