Retired Sub-Registrar Dies in Hit-and-Run by SUV in Jhansi

A 70-year-old man was killed instantly when a speeding SUV struck his scooter near Bundelkhand University campus in Jhansi on Saturday. The occupants of the SUV abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.

Incident Details

The deceased, Maniram Verma, was a retired sub-registrar who had worked at Bundelkhand University until a decade ago. He lived in the campus residential complex. On the day of the incident, he had gone out to purchase household items. While riding his scooter on the side of the road, a black SUV emerged suddenly from the examination hall building area of the university campus and hit him.

The impact was severe, with the SUV's tyres running over Verma. He was dragged several metres along with his scooter before the vehicle stopped after hitting the footpath.

Response and Investigation

Bystanders, along with police, family members, and university officials, rushed to the site. Verma was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

Some bystanders reported that a few policemen in uniform were inside the SUV. They allegedly got down with their belongings and left the vehicle behind. However, police stated that the FIR was lodged based on the vehicle number, and there was no mention of any particular person inside the SUV in the complaint.

SP City Preeti Singh said, "The entire area is surrounded by CCTV cameras, and we will soon locate the offenders and take legal action. The postmortem was performed, and the body was handed over to the family members."
