Massive Marijuana Haul Intercepted at Delhi's International Airport
In a significant narcotics bust, customs authorities at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi have apprehended a passenger who arrived from Bangkok on March 31. The arrest followed the discovery of marijuana with an estimated street value of nearly Rs 13 crore concealed within his baggage.
X-Ray Screening Uncovers Suspicious Contents
During routine security procedures, customs officials subjected the passenger's luggage to X-ray screening, which immediately flagged suspicious contents. A detailed physical examination revealed thirteen polybags containing a green-colored substance, strongly suspected to be marijuana.
The total net weight of the seized contraband was precisely 12,910 grams. Based on current market valuations, officials have estimated its worth at approximately Rs 13 crore, marking one of the substantial single-seizure operations at the airport in recent times.
Arrest and Legal Action Under NDPS Act
The passenger was promptly taken into custody. The contraband, along with all associated packing materials, has been officially seized as evidence. Authorities have confirmed that the individual has been arrested under relevant sections of the stringent Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985.
Ongoing Investigation into Smuggling Network
Customs officials have emphasized that this arrest is just the beginning of a broader investigation. A thorough probe is currently underway to uncover the identities of all persons involved and to dismantle the associated smuggling network. The focus is on tracing the origins of the narcotics, its intended destination within India, and any potential local or international connections.
This incident highlights the vigilant surveillance and advanced screening technologies employed by Indian customs to combat the illegal drug trade. It serves as a stern warning to smuggling syndicates attempting to use international air travel routes for narcotics trafficking.
