Sangrur Police Arrest Man Accused of Murder in Canada and Threats to Family
Police in Sangrur have made a significant arrest in a transnational crime case. They captured a 27-year-old man named Manpreet Singh. Authorities allege he murdered a woman in Canada and then fled to India to avoid arrest.
Details of the Murder and Transnational Flight
Senior Superintendent of Police Sartaj Singh Chahal provided details on the case. The suspect, Manpreet Singh, was wanted for the murder of Amanpreet Kaur. Amanpreet was a native of Sangrur who worked as a personal support worker in East York, Toronto.
Manpreet worked as a taxi driver in Canada. Amanpreet Kaur had moved to Canada in 2020 after finishing her nursing course. She subsequently obtained Permanent Residency status there.
Manpreet, originally from Lakhimpur in Uttar Pradesh, moved to Canada in 2022. He could not secure PR status. Deputy Superintendent of Police Devinder Attri stated this made him desperate to marry Amanpreet.
Family Reports Pressure and Disappearance
Amanpreet's father, Inderjit Singh, lives in Prem Basti, Sangrur. He told police that in October 2025, his daughter informed the family about Manpreet pressuring her to marry him. She had turned down his proposal.
On October 21, 2025, the family lost all contact with Amanpreet. Inderjit then asked his elder daughter, Gursimran Kaur, who also resides in Canada, to search for her. Gursimran discovered that Amanpreet never arrived at her workplace that day.
She immediately reported her sister missing to the Canadian police. Tragically, Amanpreet's body was later found near Niagara Falls in Ontario. DSP Attri confirmed that Manpreet stabbed her in the neck with a knife.
Return to India and Escalating Threats
After the murder, Manpreet fled Canada and returned to India. Police say he then began threatening the victim's family in Sangrur. SSP Chahal reported that Manpreet sent threats to Gursimran Kaur and her family using WhatsApp and Instagram.
In late October 2025, the situation escalated dramatically. Manpreet allegedly entered Inderjit's house while armed with a weapon. He threatened the family, warning them not to pursue the murder case in Canada. Following this terrifying incident, the family installed CCTV cameras outside their home for protection.
Brazen Acts and Cyber Harassment
The accused allegedly returned to the house on November 30, 2025, and again on January 10, 2026. On both occasions, police say he took selfies and photographs of the newly installed CCTV cameras.
He even created a fake Instagram account. Through this account, he circulated images with obscene comments, further harassing the grieving family.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Based on a formal complaint from Inderjit Singh, a case was registered against Manpreet at the cybercrime police station in Sangrur on January 14.
"We arrested the accused from Sangrur on January 15 in connection with the cybercrime case," stated DSP Attri. "He is already booked for murder in Canada and is wanted by Canadian Police. Formal communication is being carried out with Canadian authorities, following which he may be extradited for the crime committed there. We have not recovered any weapons from him at this time."
The arrest was part of a special police drive against criminal elements. The investigation was conducted under the supervision of DSP Devinder Attri and DSP Daljit Singh Virk. Police teams were led by inspectors Sandeep Singh and Harjeet Kaur. SSP Chahal confirmed that Manpreet Singh is currently under interrogation.
