Sangrur Police Crack Blind Murder Case in Five Days, Arrest Two Accused

What started as a mysterious killing of an unidentified man dumped on a rural pathway in Sangrur district turned into a shocking tale of greed, alcohol, and betrayal among habitual thieves. The Sangrur district police cracked this blind murder case within just five days and arrested two accused individuals.

Discovery of the Body

The case came to light on the morning of January 11, 2026. Villagers informed police about a man lying motionless on a path leading to agricultural fields under the jurisdiction of police station Sadar Dhuri. The victim had suffered severe head injuries and was bleeding from the mouth. With no identification documents and no eyewitnesses, the case posed a classic blind murder challenge for investigators.

Police Investigation and FIR Registration

An FIR (No. 15 dated January 11, 2026) was registered under Sections 103 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against unknown persons. Multiple police teams swung into action under the supervision of SSP Sangrur Sartaj Singh Chahal. The breakthrough did not come from the murder scene itself but from routine night patrolling.

Breakthrough from Routine Patrolling

On January 15, a police party intercepted two suspicious men near the Babbanpur village bus stand. The recovery of stolen cable wires and a knife led to their arrest in a separate theft case. The accused—Lakhanhira and Bihari Saw, both residents of Ludhiana—soon unraveled the mystery behind the unidentified body.

Police said both the accused and the deceased were migrants. Lakhanhira was already facing two cases in the past. During interrogation, the duo confessed that the deceased was their associate Subhash Kumar, a native of Uttar Pradesh, who was living in Ludhiana.

Background of the Crime

The three were habitual thieves who traveled to Dhuri on January 10 to steal cable wires from agricultural pump sets in nearby villages. Police emphasized that the crime was not a premeditated murder but a drunken fallout over stolen property.

After committing theft in village Rajomajra, the trio allegedly consumed liquor. A heated argument broke out over the distribution of the stolen cable wires, which escalated rapidly. In a moment of rage, Lakhanhira and Bihari Saw allegedly struck Subhash Kumar on the head with an iron pipe lying at the spot. The blows proved fatal.

Attempt to Conceal the Crime

Realizing he was dead, the accused abandoned the body and the weapon on a secluded pathway leading to fields. They hoped the identity of the victim would never be established. A police officer involved in the investigation stated, "The accused believed the body would remain unidentified and the crime would go unsolved." The absence of witnesses and identity made the case particularly challenging.

Formal Arrests and Next Steps

On January 16, both accused were formally arrested in the murder case. SSP Sartaj Singh Chahal stated that the accused would be produced before the court and taken on police remand. The police aim to recover the weapon of offence and trace their criminal network.

This swift resolution highlights the effectiveness of police patrolling and interrogation techniques in solving complex blind murder cases.
