SC Refuses Stay on Bail in Honeymoon Murder Case

Supreme Court Declines to Intervene

The Supreme Court on Friday declined to stay the Meghalaya High Court order that granted bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Meghalaya in 2025. A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and Sheel Nagu expressed reservations about the high court's decision but refused to stay it, noting that Raghuvanshi has already been released from jail and is currently in Shillong, complying with bail conditions set by the trial court.

Government's Objection

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the state, argued that the allegations against Raghuvanshi are serious and that she should not be released on technical grounds. He sought a stay of the high court order, but the bench declined to grant the relief. The court has scheduled further hearing after the apex court reopens.

Case Background

Sonam Raghuvanshi, a resident of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was arrested in June 2025 in connection with the murder of her husband, businessman Raja Raghuvanshi. The couple went missing while vacationing in Meghalaya's Sohra area on May 23, 2025. Raja's body was discovered in a deep gorge on June 2, 2025. Police allege that Sonam conspired with hired assailants to kill her husband for financial gain.

High Court's Bail Order

On June 29, 2025, the Meghalaya High Court upheld a trial court order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi. The state government subsequently moved the Supreme Court challenging this decision. The apex court's refusal to stay the bail order allows Raghuvanshi to remain free pending further proceedings.
