Vinay Katiyar, a former BJP MP and key figure in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, has alleged that Champat Rai and Anil Mishra, both prominent leaders in the Ram Mandir construction, could face imprisonment for their involvement in a donation theft case. Katiyar claimed that the duo misappropriated funds collected for the temple's construction, leading to a criminal investigation.
Details of the Allegations
According to Katiyar, the Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which oversees the temple construction, received massive donations from devotees worldwide. However, he asserted that a significant portion of these funds was diverted for personal gain by Rai and Mishra. Katiyar stated, "The trust's financial records show irregularities amounting to crores of rupees. This is a betrayal of the faith of millions of Hindus."
Katiyar further revealed that the Uttar Pradesh Police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including criminal breach of trust and cheating. He added that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also likely to probe the matter under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Impact on Ram Mandir Construction
The allegations have sparked controversy, with some leaders demanding a thorough investigation. Katiyar warned that if proven guilty, Rai and Mishra could face up to 10 years in jail. He emphasized that the temple construction should not be tainted by corruption, as it is a symbol of national pride.
Meanwhile, the trust has denied any wrongdoing, calling the allegations baseless. A trust spokesperson said, "The funds are managed transparently, and all expenses are audited. We welcome any investigation to clear our name."
Political Reactions
The case has also drawn political reactions. Opposition parties have seized the opportunity to criticize the BJP-led government, accusing it of protecting its allies. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav tweeted, "The temple of Lord Ram should not become a tool for personal enrichment. We demand a CBI inquiry."
However, BJP leaders have distanced themselves from the issue, stating that the trust is an independent body. Katiyar's revelations come ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, adding a new dimension to the state's political landscape.
