Driver Arrested After Children Fall from Moving Van in K.R. Puram
A school van driver in Bengaluru's K.R. Puram area has been booked by police after multiple children fell from the moving vehicle on Friday morning. The incident took place around 8:30 a.m. when the van was en route to pick up students. According to the Bengaluru Traffic Police, the driver, identified as Ramesh, was arrested and charged with negligence and endangering the lives of children.
Details of the Incident
The van, operated by a private school, was carrying approximately 12 children when the rear door suddenly swung open. Several children, aged between 6 and 10, fell onto the road. Witnesses reported that the driver did not notice the children falling and continued driving for another 50 meters before being stopped by bystanders. A passerby, Suresh Kumar, said, "We saw children tumbling out and rushed to help. The driver seemed unaware until we shouted at him."
Injuries and Immediate Response
Four children sustained minor injuries, including bruises and scratches, and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Hospital officials confirmed that all children are in stable condition and have been discharged. The school management has been notified and is cooperating with the investigation. A senior police officer stated, "The driver has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life) of the Indian Penal Code."
Investigation and School Action
Police are investigating whether the van was properly maintained, particularly the door mechanism. The school has suspended the driver pending further inquiry. A school spokesperson said, "We are deeply concerned about this incident and are taking strict action. We will ensure all our vehicles undergo thorough safety checks." The incident has raised concerns about the safety of school transport in the city. Local residents have called for stricter regulations and regular inspections of school vans.
Community Reaction and Safety Calls
Parents in the area expressed outrage and demanded accountability. "We trust schools with our children's safety. This negligence is unacceptable," said a parent whose child was in the van. The incident has sparked a broader discussion on the need for mandatory safety features such as door locks and alarms in school vehicles. The Bengaluru Traffic Police have announced a special drive to check the fitness of school vans and buses across the city.
