A devastating sequence of road accidents over two days has plunged Karnataka's Koppal district into mourning, claiming six lives and leaving multiple families shattered. The tragic incidents, which include a fatal hit-and-run, highlight the grim reality of road safety in the region.
Hit-and-Run Claims Three Young Lives
The most recent tragedy unfolded on Wednesday night near Indaragi village in Koppal taluk. A private SUV collided with a motorcycle carrying three young men and fled the scene. The impact proved fatal for all riders on the motorcycle.
The victims have been identified as Wajid, 17, and Raja Hussein, 17, both residents of Hosalli village in Koppal taluk, and Asif, 18, from Sriramnagar in Gangavathi taluk. Preliminary police reports indicate the trio was travelling from Sriramnagar to Hosalli when the speeding SUV rammed into them. Authorities at the Munirabad police station have registered a case and are searching for the absconding driver.
A Double Tragedy for One Family
In a heartbreaking twist, one of the Wednesday night victims, Raja Hussein, lost his father just a day earlier in a separate accident. Budan Saab, 52, also from Hosalli village, died on Tuesday after being struck by an unidentified vehicle near the Hitnal toll plaza on the Hosapete-Hungund National Highway 50.
The loss of both father and son within a span of 48 hours has inflicted profound grief upon their family and community, marking one of the most sorrowful episodes in the district's recent history.
Other Fatal Incidents in the 48-Hour Period
The district witnessed two other fatal accidents during this short timeframe. On Tuesday night, Maraswamy, 31, from Agalakera village, was killed after a vehicle hit him near the Galemma temple close to Kanakapur on the Koppal-Hosapete National Highway.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, a major collision occurred between a private bus and a tractor transporting devotees to the Huligemma Devi temple in Huligi. The tractor driver, Kenchappa, died on the spot, while over 20 other individuals sustained injuries in the crash.
This series of accidents, resulting in six fatalities and numerous injuries, has raised urgent questions about road safety measures, driver behaviour, and enforcement on highways and rural roads in the Koppal region. The local police have intensified investigations into the hit-and-run case and are reviewing the circumstances of all incidents.
