Student Held for Fatal Hit-and-Run in West Delhi

New Delhi police have arrested a 20-year-old student from Haryana for his alleged involvement in a devastating hit-and-run accident that claimed the lives of two individuals in the Moti Nagar area. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening, led to the death of a daily wage labourer and an elderly street vendor, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Details of the Tragic Accident

The accused, identified as Sumit Kumar, is the son of a retired Army officer and a resident of Sonipat's Sector 12. According to police reports, the tragedy unfolded around 6 pm on Wednesday near the Zakhira roundabout. A speeding car, travelling from the Zakhira side towards Karampura, first struck Munni Raj (48), who earned his living by painting and whitewashing walls. The impact was severe, and the driver then lost control of the vehicle. The car veered off its path and crashed into Surajpal (74), an elderly street vendor, crushing him along with his cart. The driver then abandoned the vehicle at the spot and fled the scene.

Investigation and Arrest

Following a PCR call about the accident, police launched an investigation. Although CCTV cameras were missing at the immediate accident site, officers successfully traced the vehicle's route and identified its owner as Sumit's father. Upon questioning, the father confirmed that his son, Sumit, had been driving the car at the time of the crash. Sumit Kumar later admitted to being behind the wheel during police interrogation. He was subsequently placed under arrest after he failed to produce a valid driving licence or insurance documents for the car.

A case was registered under the relevant BNS sections for rash driving and causing death by negligence. Subsequently, sections of the Motor Vehicles Act were also added to the First Information Report. In a significant development, the father has also been booked under sections of the MV Act for permitting his son to drive the vehicle without a valid licence and insurance.

Community Mourns the Loss

The deaths of Munni Raj and Surajpal have left a void in their community. Both were known to locals and were going about their daily lives when the tragedy struck. The incident has once again highlighted the perils of rash driving on Delhi's roads and the devastating consequences it can have on vulnerable families.
