Surat Airport Bomb Threat Incident Unfolds During Peak Hours
Tension escalated at Surat International Airport on Thursday evening when a passenger bound for Delhi allegedly made a bomb threat, triggering an immediate security response during the busy peak hours. The incident occurred around 7:45 PM, creating a high-alert situation at the aviation facility.
Rapid Activation of Bomb Threat Assessment Committee
Airline staff took the threat seriously and promptly alerted the airport director, who swiftly activated the Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC). According to official sources, the airport director received the critical information at approximately 7:50 PM, which was 80 minutes before the scheduled departure of the flight at 9:10 PM.
As the head of the BTAC, the director immediately mobilized committee members representing multiple agencies including the Airports Authority of India, the concerned airline, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), local police, fire department, and health services. This coordinated response demonstrated the airport's emergency preparedness protocols.
Thorough Investigation and Passenger Detention
The passenger and his luggage were immediately isolated from other travelers as security teams sprang into action. While one specialized team conducted a comprehensive baggage check, another team questioned the passenger and verified his background information through multiple channels.
"We conducted a thorough examination and found nothing objectionable in the passenger's luggage," confirmed an airport official involved in the operation. "Police authorities also reached the airport promptly and investigated his residential address and personal background. The passenger informed us that he had been staying at a local hotel."
Following the investigation, authorities handed the passenger over to Dumas police for further questioning and legal proceedings. The airport maintained normal operations throughout the incident, with the affected flight departing exactly at its scheduled time of 9:10 PM without the detained passenger onboard.
Separate Emergency: ONGC Helicopter Makes Safe Landing
In an unrelated incident earlier on Thursday, Surat Airport declared an emergency when an ONGC helicopter requested permission for an emergency landing around 3:15 PM. The helicopter experienced hydraulic system failure while carrying eight ONGC officials.
Airport authorities immediately deployed fire, health, and emergency response teams near the designated landing area. Hospital facilities were placed on standby as a precautionary measure. The pilot demonstrated exceptional skill by safely landing the aircraft at 3:21 PM, with all eight occupants emerging unharmed from the potentially dangerous situation.
