A tragic road accident in southeast Delhi's Sriniwaspuri area last week claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy and left two others, including an elderly man, injured. The incident occurred when a motorcycle, reportedly being ridden at high speed, struck a pedestrian.
The Fateful Evening and Collision
The accident took place around 8:30 pm last Thursday. Jagdish Kataria, a 60-year-old cloth merchant and resident of Sriniwaspuri, was on his way home from his shop. He had stopped his vehicle near a dairy to buy milk and was crossing the road on foot when the collision occurred.
According to police, a motorcycle carrying two teenagers was moving from a private colony towards the ring road at high speed. The bike hit Kataria, throwing him a short distance away. "I remember the children were coming towards me on the bike. I don't remember much of what happened after I fell," Kataria recounted.
Aftermath and Fatal Injuries
The impact caused both teenagers to fall in the middle of the road. Neither of the boys was wearing a helmet. Police officials stated that due to the bike's speed, the rider hit his head on the gravel road surface, sustaining fatal head injuries.
An auto-rickshaw driver rushed all three injured persons to a hospital. When police reached the spot, they found the motorcycle in an accidental condition and blood stains on the road. The teenage rider, a Class XI student from southeast Delhi, succumbed to his injuries days later. The pillion rider, also 17 and a student of the same class, survived with injuries.
Families and Legal Action
The case has brought immense grief to two families. The deceased boy's father is a labourer and his mother works as domestic help. The injured elderly man, Jagdish Kataria, carries a profound personal history; he is the father of Amar Kataria, who lost his life in the blast near the Red Fort.
Kataria suffered injuries to his limbs and required stitches on his head. He has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home.
Based on the investigation, the Amar Colony police station has registered a case under sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The incident underscores the deadly consequences of speeding and the critical importance of helmet use.
