Close Call for Commuters as Thane Bus Engine Erupts in Flames
Passengers on a Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) bus had a miraculous escape late on Saturday night after the vehicle's engine suddenly caught fire. The incident, which could have turned tragic, was swiftly handled thanks to the alertness of bystanders and the bus crew, ensuring that everyone on board was evacuated without harm.
Late-Night Alert on Pokhran Road
The frightening event unfolded around 11:30 pm on Saturday on the busy Pokhran Road No. 2. The bus, bearing the registration number MH 04 HY 1757, was operating on its regular Vartak Nagar–Thane Station (West) route. It was then that vigilant passersby noticed thick smoke pouring from the engine compartment, located at the rear of the bus. They immediately raised the alarm, alerting the driver and conductor to the imminent danger.
Reacting promptly, the bus staff brought the vehicle to an immediate halt. Their first priority was the safety of the commuters, and they successfully evacuated all passengers from the bus, moving them to a secure location away from the smoking vehicle.
Swift Response Averts Major Tragedy
Following the evacuation, the bus driver and conductor bravely attempted to control the initial flames while simultaneously notifying the emergency fire services. Fire and rescue teams arrived at the scene shortly after being alerted and took charge of the situation. Using their expertise and equipment, they quickly brought the blaze under control, preventing it from causing further damage or spreading.
While the exact number of passengers on board the bus at the time of the incident is yet to be officially confirmed, authorities have confirmed a major relief: no injuries were reported. Yasin Tadvi, the in-charge of the Thane Regional Disaster Management Cell, confirmed this positive outcome. The cause of the sudden engine fire is currently unknown and remains under investigation by the relevant authorities.
