In a brazen late-night robbery, a thief made off with gold jewellery valued at more than Rs 20 lakh from a residence in Siddapur, Kodagu district. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and prompted a police investigation.
The Midnight Intrusion in Siddapur
The burglary took place at the Mysuru Road home of BG Chinnappa on Wednesday night. According to police reports, Chinnappa and his wife had retired for the night after a late dinner. The peace was shattered around 3:30 am when Chinnappa's wife was awakened by an unusual noise and immediately raised an alarm.
Her husband, who was sleeping in a separate room, rushed to her aid. However, by the time they realised what was happening, the miscreant had already completed the theft and fled the scene.
Modus Operandi and Stolen Items
Investigations reveal that the accused gained entry to the house from the back, climbing through a toilet window. In an attempt to conceal his identity, the intruder had covered his face with a piece of cloth.
Once inside, the thief targeted a wardrobe, breaking it open to access the valuables. The stolen items include approximately 150 grams of gold jewellery, notably a pearl necklace, collectively estimated to be worth over Rs 20 lakh. Additionally, the burglar took Rs 5,000 in cash from the premises.
Clues Left Behind and Police Response
In what appears to be a hurried exit, the thief left behind potential evidence. Police officers who cordoned off the scene discovered a black hat and a pair of shoes, believed to have been worn by the accused during the crime.
Senior police officials, including ASP Dinesh Kumar and Madikeri DSP Suraj, personally visited the Chinnappa residence to inspect the site of the break-in. They have launched a thorough investigation, examining the clues and pursuing all leads to apprehend the culprit responsible for this high-value theft.
The incident underscores concerns about domestic security in the area, and police have likely advised residents to remain vigilant and review their home safety measures.
