A truck driver from Silchar in Assam’s Cachar district was allegedly attacked and robbed by two unidentified men on the highway near Thaizawl in southern Mizoram’s Lunglei district on Wednesday night, prompting police to launch a manhunt for the suspects.
The truck, which was en route to Lawngtlai, was intercepted by the robbers near the Myanmar refugee camp at Thaizawl, sources said. The assailants reportedly assaulted the driver with knives before fleeing with cash and documents from the vehicle. The driver survived the attack and is receiving medical treatment.
Initial speculation suggested that the attackers might be refugees from Myanmar. However, Lunglei district Superintendent of Police J. Lalmuankima Hmar stated that there is no evidence so far linking the attackers to the refugee community. “We are investigating all angles, but we cannot confirm any connection to the refugee camp at this stage,” he said.
Police have intensified search operations in the area and are examining CCTV footage and other leads to identify and apprehend the suspects. The injured driver has been providing statements to investigators, which are expected to aid in the probe.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of highway travelers in the region, particularly near the Myanmar border. Authorities have urged commuters to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
