Mumbai: The crime branch of the city police on Friday apprehended two individuals from Nagpur in connection with the killing of a 78-year-old man in Nagpada on April 20.
Details of the Accused
The primary accused, Sadique Jawar (29), is the nephew of two alleged gangsters, Sadique Kalia and Arif Kalia, who were killed in police encounters in 1999 and 2002, respectively. Police investigations revealed that Jawar suspected the deceased, Mohammed Iqbal Seliya, had acted as a police informant, leading to the encounters of his uncles. This grudge allegedly motivated the murder.
The second accused is Naushad Mithani (25), described as Jawar's associate. Jawar was employed at his father's grocery store.
The Incident
On the evening of April 20, Jawar and Mithani arrived at Seliya's residence in Madanpura. During a heated argument, Jawar allegedly stabbed Seliya more than a dozen times in the neck, abdomen, chest, and hands. The assailants fled the scene, and Seliya was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead. At the time of the attack, Seliya's wife and son were not at home.
Investigation and Arrest
A murder case was registered with the Nagpada police. The accused changed their locations and switched off their mobile phones to evade capture. The crime branch initiated a parallel probe, leveraging technical and human intelligence to track the duo. They were traced to the Bada Taj Bagh area in Nagpur and subsequently arrested.
The accused were produced before a court, which remanded them in police custody until May 2.
