Varanasi: The Kopaganj police in Mau have arrested two youths on Wednesday for allegedly writing pro-Pakistan slogans on the signboard of the Kurthijafarpur outpost. The incident came to light on Tuesday, and within minutes, photographs and videos of the defaced signboard went viral across social media platforms, prompting immediate action from the authorities.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Mau circle officer (Ghosi) Jitendra Singh stated that teams from Kopaganj police and the surveillance cell were deployed to examine CCTV footage and identify those involved. Based on scientific evidence and technical surveillance, police identified the accused as Anubhav Rai and Arun Rai, both aged around 25. The two were taken into custody on Wednesday.

Legal Action

Police subsequently registered a case under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to promoting enmity and disharmony between different groups. The section is invoked in cases where actions are intended to disrupt public order and communal harmony.

Communal Sensitivity in Mau

The incident assumed significance in communally sensitive Mau, where the district administration is currently engaged in preparations for Bakrid as well as the proposed visit of chief minister Yogi Adityanath on May 29. Authorities are on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents that could disturb the peace.

According to police, the two accused created a sensation by writing “Pakistan Hamesha Rahega” (Pakistan will always remain) on the signboard of the police outpost under Kopaganj police station limits. As images of the defaced board spread rapidly on social media, the matter triggered widespread discussion and mounted pressure on the police administration to act swiftly.

Mau ASP Anoop Kumar had sought a detailed report into the episode on Tuesday evening and directed officials to identify those responsible at the earliest. The swift response from law enforcement agencies led to the identification and arrest of the culprits within 24 hours.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges in maintaining communal harmony in sensitive regions, especially during religious festivals and high-profile visits. The police have assured that strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt public order.
