In a brazen daylight attack, gangster Vinay Tyagi was critically injured after unidentified assailants opened fire on a police van transporting him to a court hearing in Laksar. The incident, which has exposed a major security lapse, led to the swift arrest of two suspects and the suspension of three police personnel.
Details of the Laksar Attack
The attack unfolded on Wednesday morning when a police vehicle was taking the 57-year-old Tyagi from Roorkee jail to a court in Laksar. As the van reached the Laksar flyover, two masked men riding a motorcycle intercepted it and fired multiple shots at the accused gangster. The assailants then fled the scene, leaving Tyagi with severe gunshot wounds.
He was immediately rushed to AIIMS Rishikesh, where doctors have reported his condition as critical. The audacious assault on a prisoner under police custody sent shockwaves through the local administration and prompted an urgent investigation.
Police Response and Arrests
Taking serious note of the security failure, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pramendra Singh Dobal ordered a preliminary inquiry. The probe found clear negligence in the security arrangements during the prisoner's transit. Consequently, a sub-inspector and two constables were suspended from duty.
An intensive search operation was launched, involving extensive barricading and combing of the area. The miscreants had abandoned their motorcycle near Makhiyali Khurd village and fled on foot. Police recovered the bike on Wednesday.
The breakthrough came the next day when police teams arrested the two accused from an isolated location in Sikanderpur, Khanpur. The arrested individuals have been identified as Sunny Yadav and Ajay Kumar, both residents of Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar district. Police also seized two firearms believed to be used in the crime.
Motivation and Aftermath
During interrogation, both Yadav and Kumar confessed to firing at Tyagi and the police team. Investigators revealed that the duo had previously worked for Tyagi, suggesting a possible falling out or a motive rooted in past rivalries within the criminal network.
SSP Dobal confirmed their confessions and the recovery of the weapons. The incident has raised serious questions about the protocols for transporting high-risk prisoners and has led to a review of security procedures.
The case remains under active investigation as authorities look into all possible angles, including any larger conspiracy behind the targeted attack. The focus is now on ensuring Tyagi's recovery for further legal proceedings and tightening security measures to prevent such lapses in the future.
