Tragic Sewer Accident in Jaipur Claims Two Lives, Leaves One Critical
A devastating sewer-cleaning accident in Jaipur has resulted in the deaths of two workers and left another in critical condition, raising serious questions about worker safety protocols. The incident occurred on Friday in the Jaipur Municipal Corporation's Jhotwara Zone at a sewer chamber located on Shekhawat Marg near Niwaru Road.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to police reports, three workers identified as Ajay, Rambabu, and Ravi were hired by a JMC contractor to perform cleaning work. The workers entered the sewer tank to open a valve when they suddenly collapsed due to suspected methane gas accumulation inside the confined space. Fellow workers at the site attempted a rescue operation and shut down the chamber, but all three had already been severely affected by the toxic fumes.
Kardhani police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams quickly reached the location and conducted an emergency rescue operation. All three workers were rushed to Kanwatia Hospital, where Ajay and Rambabu were pronounced dead upon arrival. Ravi remains hospitalized and is undergoing intensive treatment for gas inhalation.
Official Response and Investigation
JMC Commissioner Om Kasera acknowledged the tragedy, stating, "There has been a lapse somewhere. A proper inquiry will be conducted, and action will be taken against those found responsible." The commissioner's statement comes amid growing public outrage over repeated incidents involving sanitation workers in hazardous conditions.
Protests and Demands for Justice
Following the incident, family members of the victims and fellow sanitation workers gathered at the government hospital. Members of the Sayukt Valimiki Evam Safayi Shramik Sangh staged a protest, demanding immediate action against those responsible for the tragedy.
Union member Suresh Dabodiya highlighted the violation of safety protocols, stating, "Supreme Court guidelines clearly state that no sanitation worker should be sent into such tanks without proper safety equipment. When machines and robots are available, why were workers sent inside?"
The sanitation workers' union has presented several demands:
- Immediate arrest of the JMC contractor and concerned officials including JEN, AEN, and XEN
- Government employment for one family member of each deceased worker
- Compensation of Rs 1 crore each to the families of the victims
- Implementation of strict measures to prevent similar incidents in the future
The union has issued a warning that if their demands are ignored, they will organize wider protests across Jaipur and throughout Rajasthan. This incident has reignited the ongoing debate about the safety of sanitation workers who regularly perform hazardous duties without adequate protective equipment or proper safety protocols.
