Major Drug Bust in Shillong's Outskirts

The anti-narcotic task force of Meghalaya Police scored a significant victory against drug trafficking on Monday night with the apprehension of two alleged drug peddlers in the Mawiong area, located on the outskirts of Shillong.

According to official police reports, the arrested individuals have been identified as Ajay Kumar Rai and Gulshan Singh. The operation led to the recovery of substantial contraband items, dealing a blow to drug distribution networks operating in the region.

How the Operation Unfolded

The breakthrough came following a specific tip-off received by the police department. Acting swiftly on this intelligence, the anti-narcotic team established a strategic check point, locally known as a 'naka,' at the Inter State Bus Terminus junction in Mawiong.

Police officials reported that during the surveillance operation, they intercepted a motorcycle bearing registration number ML 05-AE-4379 approaching from the Guwahati direction and heading toward Shillong city. The vehicle was being ridden by Ajay Kumar Rai with Gulshan Singh as the pillion rider.

Upon conducting a thorough search of the suspects, the ANTF team made significant discoveries. From Gulshan Singh, they recovered a soap box containing suspected contraband material, while Ajay Kumar Rai was found in possession of pharmaceutical drugs.

Contraband Seizure and Testing Results

The detailed examination revealed that the substance recovered from Singh was heroin, confirmed through preliminary testing procedures. The police confirmed that 17.22 grams of heroin was seized from the accused.

Additionally, the search of Rai yielded 39 nitrazepam tablets, a prescription medication often abused for recreational purposes. The successful operation prevented these dangerous substances from reaching the streets of Shillong and potentially harming the community.

Both accused individuals have been taken into custody and face serious charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NPDS) Act. The police have registered a formal case and initiated a comprehensive investigation to uncover possible connections to larger drug networks and identify other individuals involved in the illegal trade.

This operation underscores Meghalaya Police's continued commitment to combating the drug menace in the state and protecting the youth from substance abuse. The anti-narcotic task force has intensified its vigil across the region, particularly focusing on transit points and border areas that drug peddlers frequently use for transportation.
