In a tragic late-night incident, two young men from Meerut lost their lives after the car they were travelling in plunged into the Gangnahar canal. The fatal accident occurred on Saturday night near the Mohammadpur Power House in the Narsan area, close to Manglaur.
Details of the Tragic Accident
The victims have been identified as Saurabh Sharma, aged 23, and Ayush Sharma, aged 21. Both were residents of Kurali village in Meerut and were known to be neighbours and close friends. According to police and family accounts, the duo was returning from Roorkee to Meerut via the canal embankment road.
The accident took place around 11 pm at a location known for a sharp blind turn. Authorities noted the absence of any warning sign board at this hazardous spot. As the car attempted to negotiate the turn, it failed to make the curve, went straight off the road, and fell into an escape canal that was approximately 20 feet deep.
Rescue Operation and Police Findings
Manglaur police swiftly launched a rescue operation upon receiving information. The vehicle was eventually retrieved from the canal with the assistance of a crane. Tragically, both youths were found dead inside the car.
Inspector Amarjeet Singh, in charge of Manglaur police station, stated that preliminary investigation suggests high speed was a likely factor. "The car was likely being driven at high speed. The driver lost control at the sharp turn, causing the vehicle to plunge into the canal," he said. Despite the canal having only about a foot of stagnant water at the time, the impact of the fall caused severe damage to the vehicle.
Background of the Victims and Aftermath
Family members provided a heartbreaking context to the journey. Ayush Sharma, a BPharma graduate, had been working with a pharmaceutical company near Roorkee and had recently quit his job. He had called his friend Saurabh to help him transport his belongings back to their hometown, Meerut.
This incident has once again highlighted critical road safety issues, particularly the danger posed by poorly designed or unmarked turns on rural and embankment roads. The lack of warning signage at the accident spot is a point of grave concern that locals and authorities are now forced to confront in the wake of this double tragedy.
