US fines Indian-origin lawyer $250K for asylum fraud

The United States federal authorities have announced plans to impose a fine of more than $250,000 on an Indian-origin attorney for allegedly filing fraudulent documents and false asylum claims on behalf of Indian nationals.

Attorney operated nationwide practice

Vinod Doddamani, the attorney in question, operated a nationwide practice in which he primarily represented Indian nationals. He filed asylum applications on their behalf before immigration courts, according to a US statement released on Tuesday.

Identical narratives flagged by authorities

The US authorities stated that in support of the asylum claims, Doddamani filed alien declarations that were identical or nearly identical in language and substance. These declarations contained the same or nearly the same factual narrative and supporting details regarding alleged persecution, raising red flags for fraud.

Impact of fraudulent filings

Such fraudulent filings undermine the integrity of the US asylum system and waste judicial resources. The fine of over $250,000 is intended to deter similar misconduct by other attorneys.
