Uttarayan Festivities Marred by Violence in Ahmedabad
Uttarayan celebrations took a violent turn in parts of Ahmedabad on Wednesday. The Makarba and Vejalpur areas witnessed separate brawls that left several people injured. Police have now registered formal complaints in response to these incidents.
First Incident in Makarba
In the Makarba locality, a dispute erupted during kite flying activities. Mahesh Thakor, a 32-year-old taxi driver, reported the incident to authorities. He resides in the Krishna Dham Auda housing society near the Makarba railway crossing.
According to the First Information Report, Thakor was flying kites with family and neighbors on his residential terrace. At around 4 PM on Wednesday, a quarrel broke out between a third-floor resident and four unidentified men.
When Thakor and others tried to intervene and calm the situation, one of the unknown men allegedly struck him on the head with a wooden stick. His cousin Vijay Thakor received slaps during the altercation.
The assailants reportedly abused the victims before fleeing the scene in a white car. Mahesh Thakor sustained a head injury that required medical stitches at Sola Civil Hospital.
Second Incident in Vejalpur
In a separate complaint from Vejalpur, Salman Khan reported another violent encounter. The 24-year-old garage worker from Fatehwadi alleged he was assaulted following a dispute over abusive language during kite flying.
Salman stated that earlier in the evening, he objected to a neighbor named Faizan for using foul language on the terrace. Though the matter seemed resolved initially, tensions escalated later at night.
Salman alleged that Faizan's father Yasin, along with Faizan and his brother Farhan, attacked him near the society entrance. They reportedly used a stick, knife, and baseball bat during the assault.
The attack left Salman with injuries to his head, leg, and arm. He received treatment at Sola Civil Hospital alongside other victims from the day's violence.
Police Response and Investigation
Police have registered two separate cases based on these complaints. The Anandnagar police station filed the first FIR from the Makarba incident. The Vejalpur police station handled the second complaint from the Fatehwadi area.
Authorities are currently investigating both cases to identify the accused individuals. The investigation remains active as police gather more details about the violent episodes.
These incidents have cast a shadow over what is typically a joyous Uttarayan celebration in Ahmedabad. The city usually comes alive with kite flying and festivities during this annual event.
