The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has criticised the Faizabad Bar Association for its decision not to defend the individuals accused of theft at the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The VHP urged the bar association to reconsider its stance, stating that every accused has the right to legal representation.
VHP's Appeal to the Bar Association
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the VHP expressed disapproval of the bar association's resolution. The organisation emphasised that denying legal counsel goes against the principles of justice. "No sympathy for them but the rule of law must be followed. Every accused deserves a fair trial," a VHP spokesperson said.
The theft incident, which occurred earlier this month, involved the misappropriation of funds collected for the temple's construction. The accused were arrested following an investigation by the local police.
Bar Association's Decision
The Faizabad Bar Association had passed a resolution refusing to represent the accused, citing the sensitivity of the case and the temple's religious significance. The association's secretary confirmed the decision, stating that lawyers would not take up the brief for the accused individuals.
Legal experts have noted that while bar associations can adopt resolutions, denying representation may conflict with professional ethics. The Supreme Court has previously ruled that lawyers cannot refuse cases based on personal beliefs.
Reactions from Political and Religious Groups
The VHP's criticism has drawn mixed reactions. Some religious groups have supported the bar association's stance, while others have called for adherence to legal norms. Political parties have also weighed in, with opposition leaders questioning the VHP's intervention.
The accused remain in judicial custody as the investigation continues. The temple trust has declined to comment on the legal proceedings.
