Labour Minister's Surprise Raids Reveal Alarming Safety Failures at Vizag Construction Sites
In a series of unannounced inspections conducted on Wednesday, State Labour Minister Vasamsetti Subhash uncovered multiple critical lapses at construction sites across Visakhapatnam. The surprise visits, aimed at enforcing compliance with labour regulations, exposed a disturbing pattern of negligence affecting worker safety and welfare.
Basic Amenities and Safety Gear Found Lacking
The inspections revealed that several construction locations were operating without essential restroom facilities. In some instances, toilets were present but remained locked, rendering them inaccessible to workers. Furthermore, numerous labourers were observed working without mandatory protective equipment, including masks, gloves, helmets, and safety boots, putting them at significant risk of injury.
Financial Violations and Cess Payment Defaults
Beyond physical safety concerns, the raids brought to light serious financial irregularities. Companies were found to be in violation of cess payment obligations, with outstanding dues totaling nearly ₹10 crore. This non-compliance underscores broader issues in adherence to statutory labour contributions.
Minister's Directives and Worker Engagement
During the inspections, Minister Subhash actively engaged with workers, explaining the various welfare benefits available under government regulations. He emphasized the importance of labour registration, noting that workers can register for a lifetime by paying just ₹110. This registration grants access to a range of benefits, such as maternity assistance, marriage aid, funeral expenses, and financial support in case of natural death.
The minister issued stern instructions to officials and employers, mandating the enforcement of safety equipment usage and the provision of basic facilities. He warned that failure to implement these welfare measures would result in strict punitive action. "Safety standards must be adhered to in building construction without fail," Subhash asserted, highlighting the non-negotiable nature of compliance.
Call for Comprehensive Compliance
Subhash directed construction firms to immediately address all identified shortcomings. This includes ensuring proper labour registration, clearing cess payment arrears, adhering to safety norms, and providing adequate basic amenities. The surprise inspections serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in the construction sector and the government's commitment to safeguarding worker rights through rigorous oversight.
