A woman was attacked by a pack of stray dogs in Bengaluru's KR Puram area on Tuesday morning, leaving her with multiple injuries. The incident occurred near the KR Puram railway station when the victim, identified as 45-year-old Lakshmi, was walking to work. According to eyewitnesses, a group of six to seven dogs suddenly surrounded her and began biting her legs and arms.
Passersby rushed to her rescue and managed to drive the dogs away. Lakshmi was then taken to a nearby hospital, where she received treatment for her wounds. Doctors confirmed that she suffered deep bites on her left leg and right arm, but her condition is stable.
Rising Stray Dog Incidents
This attack is the latest in a series of similar incidents reported across Bengaluru. Residents of KR Puram have been complaining about the growing number of stray dogs in the area for months. They claim that the local municipal corporation has failed to address the issue effectively.
"We have been raising this issue with the authorities repeatedly, but no action has been taken. It has become dangerous for women and children to walk on the streets," said Ramesh, a local shopkeeper.
Authorities Respond
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has stated that it will investigate the incident. A BBMP official said, "We will deploy a team to capture the aggressive dogs and relocate them to a shelter. We also urge residents to report such incidents immediately."
Animal rights activists, however, argue that culling or relocating dogs is not a permanent solution. They advocate for sterilization and vaccination drives to control the stray dog population humanely.
Public Safety Concerns
The attack has reignited the debate on stray dog management in Bengaluru. While some residents demand stricter measures, others call for compassion towards animals. The city has seen a surge in stray dog attacks in recent years, with several cases reported in 2024 alone.
Lakshmi, who is now recovering at home, said she is traumatized by the incident. "I fear stepping out of my house now. The authorities must do something to ensure our safety," she said.
