In a historic first for security arrangements at major religious gatherings, the Uttar Pradesh Police's Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) will deploy its elite all-woman commando unit to safeguard the upcoming Magh Mela in Prayagraj. The massive annual congregation on the banks of the Ganga is scheduled to begin on January 3, 2026, and is expected to draw a staggering 15 crore devotees and visitors.
Elite Women Commandos on High Alert
The security blueprint for the mega event involves two highly trained ATS teams, comprising 30 women commandos. These specialists are coordinating closely with the Mela police to establish a strict surveillance grid across the fair area. Their focus will be particularly sharp on the ghats and the entire mela campus. A senior police officer emphasized that the ATS teams, including the women commandos, are on high alert and will play a vital role in enhancing the overall security apparatus.
These commandos are not new to high-pressure scenarios. In the lead-up to the Magh Mela, they participated in several intensive mock drills alongside other elite forces. Their mandate extends beyond static security; they will actively monitor visitor movements to preempt any potential threats.
Rigorous and Diverse Combat Training
The women inducted into this special unit are among the finest fighters, receiving world-class training to handle any situation. Their preparation has been multifaceted and rigorous. They were trained by expert instructors from premier paramilitary forces including the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
Their skill set is a blend of global combat techniques. They have mastered Krav Maga, the renowned Israeli unarmed combat system, and received specialized training from Korean coaches. This is supplemented by proficiency in various martial arts, making them a versatile and formidable force. A senior officer stated that they have been trained to proficiently handle all kinds of tactical equipment and weapons, ensuring they are prepared for any contingency.
SPOT Teams for Immediate Counter-Terror Response
Integral to the security plan is the Special Police Operation Team (SPOT) under the ATS umbrella. The all-women SPOT squads are a critical component of this structure. They are specifically designed to take immediate charge if the Mela area requires swift counter-terrorism action, especially across multiple locations simultaneously.
