Yatindra Alleges SIR Misuse to Snatch Voting Rights in Karnataka
Yatindra: SIR Used to Deny Voting Rights in Karnataka

Congress leader Yatindra has accused the Karnataka government of misusing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process to systematically deny voting rights to eligible citizens. He claimed that the SIR, intended to clean up electoral rolls, is being weaponized to disenfranchise voters, particularly from opposition-leaning constituencies.

No Time for Appeals

Yatindra highlighted that many voters who were removed from the rolls during the SIR were not given adequate opportunity to appeal. “There was no time for voters, who were denied voting rights, to file an appeal in the court as the elections were around the corner,” he said. The Election Commission’s schedule for the revision process overlapped with the election timeline, effectively blocking legal recourse for affected individuals.

Allegations of Targeted Removal

The Congress leader alleged that the SIR was conducted in a biased manner, with a disproportionate number of voters from certain areas being struck off. He claimed that over 2 lakh voters were removed in the latest revision, many without proper verification. “This is a deliberate attempt to manipulate the electoral outcome,” Yatindra added, calling for an independent inquiry into the process.

Government Denies Charges

In response, state election officials denied any wrongdoing, stating that the SIR was carried out as per guidelines to remove duplicate and deceased voters. “The process is transparent and follows due procedure. Appeals were possible through designated officers,” a senior official said. However, Yatindra countered that the appeal window was effectively closed due to the proximity of polling dates.

Impact on Voter Confidence

Political analysts warn that such allegations could undermine public trust in the electoral system. The controversy comes ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, where voter turnout and roll accuracy are critical. Yatindra has urged the Election Commission to extend the appeal deadline and ensure no eligible voter is disenfranchised.
