Building Collapse in Pune's Moshi
At least 10 people are feared trapped after a three-storey building collapsed in Pune's Moshi area on Wednesday. The incident occurred when a huge mound of garbage slipped from its position due to heavy rainfall over the past five days and crashed onto the building, according to local officials.
Rescue Operations Underway
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed to assist in rescue operations. The Pune Municipal Corporation and local police are also at the scene, working to clear debris and locate survivors. The building, located in a residential area, is believed to have housed several families.
Heavy rainfall has been lashing Pune district since last week, causing waterlogging and landslides in several areas. The continuous downpour is suspected to have loosened the garbage mound, leading to the collapse.
Authorities Respond
Pune District Collector has confirmed that rescue efforts are ongoing. "We have deployed NDRF teams and are using heavy machinery to remove debris. So far, no casualties have been confirmed, but we are prepared for any situation," he said. The affected families have been shifted to nearby relief shelters.
Local residents reported hearing a loud noise around 11 am before the building gave way. "We saw a huge pile of garbage sliding down and hitting the building. It collapsed within seconds," said a witness.
Investigation and Safety Concerns
Authorities have ordered an investigation into the incident, focusing on the stability of the garbage mound and the building's structural integrity. The area has been cordoned off, and traffic has been diverted. This incident highlights the risks posed by unregulated waste dumping in urban areas, especially during monsoon seasons.
