In a tragic incident in Madhya Pradesh's Panna district, five labourers lost their lives after soil caved in during a well excavation operation on Wednesday. The accident occurred in the early hours of the morning at a site in the village of Khamhariya, under the jurisdiction of the Panna police station.
Details of the Incident
The workers were engaged in digging a well when the soil suddenly collapsed, burying them under a massive pile of earth. Local authorities were alerted immediately, and rescue teams, including personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), rushed to the spot.
After hours of relentless efforts, the bodies of all five labourers were recovered. The deceased have been identified as residents of nearby villages. Their families have been informed, and the district administration has announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin.
Rescue Operations
The rescue operation was hampered by the loose soil and the depth of the well, which made it challenging for the teams to reach the trapped workers. Heavy machinery was deployed to remove the debris. The district collector and senior police officials supervised the operation.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed grief over the incident and directed officials to provide all possible assistance to the affected families. He also ordered an inquiry into the matter to ascertain the cause of the accident and to prevent such incidents in the future.
