More than 50.7 lakh pilgrims visited the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, during the first six months of 2026, marking a 27% year-on-year increase. The shrine board reported that 39.84 lakh devotees had visited during the same period in 2025.
Record Pilgrim Numbers
According to data released by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, the daily average footfall has risen significantly. The shrine, located in the Trikuta Mountains, remains one of India's most visited religious destinations, attracting devotees from across the country and abroad.
Officials attributed the surge to improved infrastructure, enhanced security measures, and better facilities for pilgrims. The yatra route has been upgraded with additional shelters, medical aid stations, and sanitation facilities.
Infrastructure and Safety Enhancements
The Jammu and Kashmir administration has implemented several measures to manage the increased crowd. Additional helicopter services have been introduced, and the number of trains to Katra has been increased. The shrine board has also deployed more personnel for crowd management and emergency response.
"We are committed to ensuring a safe and smooth pilgrimage experience for all devotees," said a shrine board official. "The increase in numbers reflects the confidence pilgrims have in our arrangements."
Economic Impact
The surge in pilgrimage has boosted the local economy, with hotels, restaurants, and transport services in Katra and surrounding areas reporting higher business. The yatra season typically peaks during summer and major festivals, and the current trend indicates continued growth.
The shrine board has also launched a mobile app for real-time updates on darshan timings, weather conditions, and queue status. Cashless payment options have been expanded at various points along the yatra route.
