Air India Flight to US Returns Due to Technical Snag

An Air India flight bound for San Francisco from Delhi was forced to return to the Indian capital midway through its journey on Wednesday due to a technical snag, an airline spokesperson said.

Flight Details

The Boeing 777-200LR aircraft, operating as flight AI173, took off from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi at around 2:30 a.m. local time. However, after flying for about four hours, the pilots detected a technical issue and decided to return to Delhi as a precautionary measure.

Safety First

The airline emphasized that the decision was taken in the interest of safety. The aircraft landed safely at Delhi airport at around 9:30 a.m. local time, and all passengers deplaned normally. There were no reports of injuries or panic among the 225 passengers and 16 crew members on board.

Passenger Arrangements

Air India arranged for alternative accommodation for the affected passengers. The airline said it was working to rebook passengers on the next available flights to San Francisco. Some passengers were accommodated on other airlines as well.

Technical Snag Details

The exact nature of the technical snag has not been disclosed, but sources indicated it could be related to a minor issue with the aircraft's engine. The airline has grounded the aircraft for inspection and maintenance. An engineering team is examining the plane to determine the cause of the problem.

Industry Context

This incident is not isolated. In recent months, several airlines have faced similar technical issues, leading to flight diversions or returns. Aviation experts stress that such precautionary measures are standard and underscore the industry's commitment to safety. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been notified about the incident.

The affected passengers expressed mixed reactions. Some appreciated the airline's cautious approach, while others voiced frustration over the delay. Air India has assured that all passengers will be compensated as per regulations.
