A controversy triggered by a viral video allegedly showing Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann disrespecting Sikh Gurus has escalated into a rare public standoff between the state's highest political office and the Sikhs' supreme temporal authority, Akal Takht. Even as both sides issue clarifications, Sikh intellectuals have voiced concern over how the dispute has unfolded, terming it unfortunate and potentially damaging to the image of Sikh institutions.
Background of the Dispute
The issue intensified after the Akal Takht declared Mann "Guru Dokhi" (adversary of the Gurus) and "Khalsa Panth Virodhi" (opposed to the Khalsa Panth). On January 15, Mann had appeared barefoot before the Akal Takht to present his explanation regarding alleged remarks on Sikh religious institutions, Guru Ki Golak (gurdwara donation boxes), and Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. According to Sikh intellectual Ravinder Singh, Mann reportedly submitted between 25,000 and 30,000 pages of documents and complaints to the Akal Takht secretariat during that appearance. These documents highlighted various alleged irregularities and anomalies in the functioning of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). Mann had urged the Akal Takht Jathedar to examine the complaints and initiate an investigation wherever necessary.
Escalation and Reactions
"Till date, there has been no response regarding those complaints," Ravinder Singh said, suggesting that the current confrontation could also prompt questions about the status of the documents submitted months ago. The Akal Takht secretariat on Saturday released what it described as a portion of a video from Mann's appearance before Sikh clergy on January 15, further fueling the controversy. Another Sikh think tank, Sarchand Singh, believed that the controversy has moved beyond the viral video itself and now reflects a larger debate about accountability, transparency, and the relationship between Sikh religious institutions and political leadership. "The supporters of both sides continue to defend their respective positions publicly but they should exercise restraint," he said.
Concerns Over Institutional Dignity
Several scholars argue the matter should have been resolved with restraint rather than through public exchanges, warning that open disagreements between religious and political leadership risk deepening divisions within the Panth. "After Sikh clergy announced Mann 'Guru Dokhi' and 'Khalsa Panth Virodhi' from the rostrum of Akal Takht, the Akal Takht secretariat should have not raised any issue in public domain through media as it released the video of Mann along with its script to the media on Saturday," Sarchand Singh said. The priority, he added, should be preserving the dignity of Sikh institutions and ensuring that differences are addressed through established channels rather than through public confrontations that may deepen divisions within the Panth.
