Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expanded his council of ministers on Tuesday, swearing in four new members, including the state's longest-serving woman legislator and a prominent tea tribe leader.
Longest-Serving Woman MLA Joins Cabinet
Six-time MLA from Golaghat, Neog, who has represented the constituency continuously since 2001, was among those inducted. She is the longest-serving woman legislator in Assam's history, marking a significant milestone in the state's political landscape.
Tea Tribe Representation Strengthened
The cabinet expansion also saw the induction of a leader from the tea tribe community, a move aimed at bolstering representation of this influential group. The tea tribes have long been a key vote bank in Assam, and their inclusion in the cabinet is seen as a strategic political move ahead of upcoming elections.
Other Inductees
Two other MLAs also took oath as ministers. The new cabinet members are expected to take charge of key portfolios, though the exact allocations are yet to be announced. The expansion comes as part of the BJP-led government's efforts to balance regional and community interests.
Political Significance
Observers note that the induction of Neog, a seasoned politician, brings experience and stability to the cabinet. Her continuous representation of Golaghat for over two decades underscores her strong connect with constituents. Meanwhile, the tea tribe leader's appointment is likely to resonate with the community, which has often demanded greater political representation.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at the state secretariat in Dispur, attended by senior BJP leaders and party workers. Chief Minister Sarma expressed confidence that the new ministers would contribute effectively to the state's development agenda.
