Tensions escalated in Balachaur town, Jalandhar district, on Monday as supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) clashed following the arrest of senior BJP leader Sanjeev Arora. The incident occurred near the local police station, where a large crowd had gathered to protest Arora's detention.
Background of the Arrest
Sanjeev Arora, a prominent BJP figure and former MLA, was taken into custody by the Punjab Police earlier in the day on charges related to alleged inflammatory remarks made during a political rally. The arrest prompted immediate backlash from BJP workers, who accused the AAP-led state government of targeting opposition leaders ahead of the upcoming local body elections.
Clash Details
According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation began when AAP activists staged a counter-demonstration near the protest site, leading to heated exchanges. The situation quickly spiraled into physical altercations, with both sides throwing stones and wielding sticks. Several individuals sustained minor injuries before police intervened to disperse the crowds using batons and water cannons. At least a dozen people were taken into custody for questioning.
Political Reactions
BJP state president Sunil Jakhar condemned the arrest, calling it a "political vendetta" and demanding Arora's immediate release. He alleged that the AAP government was using police machinery to stifle dissent. In contrast, AAP spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang defended the arrest, stating that the law was taking its course against hate speech and that no one was above the law.
The clash has heightened political tensions in the region, with both parties calling for calm while accusing each other of instigating violence. The police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rioting and unlawful assembly, and have launched an investigation into the incident.
Local residents expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation, urging political leaders to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than confrontation. The district administration has imposed Section 144 in the area to prevent further gatherings and maintain peace.
